Descript AI Credits vs PilotCut: Bring the Agent You Already Pay For
Creators report running out of Descript AI credits while media minutes remain. PilotCut is free during beta, with 83 purpose-built editing tools and no PilotCut credit meter. Bring the agent you already pay for.
Descript AI Credits vs PilotCut: Bring the Agent You Already Pay For
Free during beta. Bring the agent you already pay for. Creators are tired of stacking another product subscription in 2026. PilotCut runs on macOS and ships a Windows Beta, with 83 purpose-built editing tools, shaped by tens of thousands of hours of video-editing practice, so your agent and you waste less time and money. Connect Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, Grok Build, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode, or Antigravity. There is no PilotCut credit meter.
Descript is a transcript-first editor, and many creators start there for talking-head cleanup. The friction that shows up in public posts is the two-bucket meter: media minutes and AI credits.
Descript's own help article documents the new plan shape. Creator includes 1800 media minutes per month and 800 AI credits per month. AI credits draw for Underlord, Studio Sound, effects, text-to-speech, avatars, generative video, and more. Descript does not publish a per-action credit price; check the help page and Descript's pricing page for current plans.
What creators are saying on X
These are real posts. Treat them as user reports, not lab benchmarks.
@Rethaxman wrote: "I subscribed to the Descript Creator plan... I ran out of AI credits... I have 1800 minutes of voice balance remaining. It's still asking me to buy more credits to use those 1800 minutes."
That is the split pool in plain language. Media minutes left. AI credits gone. The edit that needed AI is still blocked.
@tomaslau described starting in Descript, running out of AI credits mid-edit, then rebuilding the cut with ChatGPT Codex, HyperFrames, FFmpeg, Whisper, and ElevenLabs. The pattern is familiar: the agent work moved to tools the creator already paid for.
@alexwendlingX alleged buying AI credits and then being charged for three yearly memberships in three months. Treat that as one user's allegation, not proven fraud. Billing disputes belong with Descript support and the user's bank records.
@David___Mbugua posted a short video asking whether Descript is more expensive once you account for Media Minutes, AI Credits, and Underlord. The question matches the help article's two-pool model.
@armaanagrawal_ wrote that trials of Descript, Kapwing, Veed, CapCut, Gling, and Recut still left major manual work. It is a reminder that an "AI edit" needs a timeline you can review.
What Descript's help page actually says
From the legacy and sunset plan article:
| Plan (as listed) | Included |
|---|---|
| Free | 60 media minutes per month, 100 AI credits (one-time) |
| Education / Nonprofit Hobbyist | 600 media minutes per month, 400 AI credits per month |
| Creator | 1800 media minutes per month, 800 AI credits per month |
| Business | 2400 media minutes per month, 1500 AI credits per month |
Media minutes draw when you upload or record. AI credits draw when you use AI-powered features. Creator and Business can buy top-ups. Unused media minutes do not roll over monthly.
That structure explains the X posts above. If your weekly edit burns AI features faster than the monthly credit pool, you top up or stop.
What PilotCut does instead
PilotCut runs on macOS and ships a Windows Beta. Your media and your project stay on your own computer, and editing, preview, and rendering run there too. What you send to your agent goes to the agent provider you chose.
Free during beta. Bring the agent you already pay for.
What your agent works with:
- 83 purpose-built editing tools, shaped by tens of thousands of hours of video-editing practice. You and your agent drive the same editor.
- Plan first, then apply. For silence, filler-word, and dead-air cleanup, the agent first returns a plan of the cuts, then applies it in a separate step once the cuts are right.
- Breath-safe cuts keep dialogue natural.
- Agents: Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, Grok Build, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode, Antigravity.
- Final Cut Pro handoff: export the timeline as FCPXML when a project moves on to Final Cut Pro.
Why bring your own agent in 2026
Creators are tired of stacking another product subscription in 2026. PilotCut is free during beta: no PilotCut subscription, and no PilotCut credit meter.
The AI path is to bring the agent you already pay for: Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, Grok Build, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode, or Antigravity. Those are the frontier agents you already chose. Descript draws AI credits for its own AI features (help), and consumer editors in the CapCut class do not put your Claude Code or ChatGPT Codex plan inside the timeline either.
Using the agent you already pay for on a PilotCut timeline is how you get more done with money you already spend. That stack saves your time and your agent bill, instead of adding a third AI tax.
Side by side
| Need | Descript (new plans) | PilotCut |
|---|---|---|
| AI cost shape | AI credit pool + media minutes (help) | Free during beta; your agent bills to the plan you already pay for |
| Credit meter for agent edits | AI credits for AI features | No PilotCut credit meter |
| Review before cuts land | Descript's own review flow | The agent returns a plan first, then applies it |
| Where footage lives | Descript project and cloud workflow | On your own computer |
| Agent choice | Descript's own AI | Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, Grok Build, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode, Antigravity |
A practical path off the credit cliff
- Keep the agent you already pay for (Claude Code or ChatGPT Codex are common).
- Import or record into PilotCut so the timeline is on your computer and easy to inspect.
- Ask the agent for a cleanup plan: silences, filler words, and dead air.
- Read the plan, then have the agent apply it when the cuts are right.
- Export at full quality, or export FCPXML when the project moves on to Final Cut Pro.
Why separate pools feel expensive mid-edit
The help article is clear that media minutes and AI credits are different drawers. Upload-heavy weeks burn minutes. Underlord-heavy and effects-heavy weeks burn credits. A creator can look "fully paid up" on minutes and still be blocked on the AI feature that made them subscribe.
That mismatch is what @Rethaxman described, with Creator minutes left and AI credits empty. It is also why @tomaslau rebuilt outside Descript with ChatGPT Codex and other tools once credits ran out mid-edit.
For weekly cleanup on footage you already shot, with your own agent and no PilotCut credit meter, try PilotCut. It is free during beta.
What "83 purpose-built tools" means in practice
When this post talks about tools, it means the editor you and your agent share:
- Timeline cuts
- Transcript cleanup: silences, filler words, and dead air
- Chapters generated from the edit
- Captions
- Canvas and layout tools
- A filmstrip preview for a quick visual check
- FCPXML export for Final Cut Pro
Cost shape over a month
| Stack | What you pay | What you watch |
|---|---|---|
| Descript Creator-class plan | Subscription + AI credit top-ups when the pool empties (help) | Media minutes and AI credits |
| PilotCut + Claude Code or ChatGPT Codex | PilotCut is free during beta + the agent plan you already pay for | Agent usage on your provider bill, not a PilotCut credit pack |
For weekly cleanup on your own timeline, with your own agent and no PilotCut credit meter, bring Claude Code or ChatGPT Codex to PilotCut.
Bottom line
Descript's public help docs make the meter explicit: media minutes and AI credits are separate pools. Creators on X are already reporting the pain of empty AI credits with minutes left.
PilotCut takes a different path. Free during beta. No PilotCut subscription. Bring the frontier agents you already pay for: Claude Code, ChatGPT Codex, Grok Build, GitHub Copilot, OpenCode, or Antigravity. 83 purpose-built editing tools in one editor. No PilotCut credit meter. That stack saves time and money you already spend, instead of metering another bundled AI.
Try PilotCut. It is free during beta.
